STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY:
The Personal Care Aide is a person who, under professional supervision, provides patients assistance with nutritional and environmental support as an extension of self-directed patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
o    Successful completion of an approved training program in home health services, or
o    An approved personal care aide training program, or
o    PCA Alternative Competency Demonstration (ACD) approved by the Department of Health, or
o    An equivalent exam approved by the Department.

Specific:
o    Is able to read, write, understand and carryout directions or instructions, record messages and to keep simple records.
o    Sympathetic attitude toward providing services for patients at home who home medical problems.
o    Access to utilization of public or private transportation system.
o    Ability to communicate information concerning a patient's condition clearly.
o    Is able to use the telephone, good communication skills.
o    Functions independently with minimal supervision.
o    Ability to move intermittently throughout the work day, inclusive of sitting, standing and bending, pushing, pulling or moving objects and patients
o    Ability to relate to and work the various personality styles, ill, disabled and elderly.
o    Read, write and communicate in English.
o    Maturity, emotional and mental stability.
o    Experience in personal care or homemaking.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
o    Plan, purchase, prepare and serve basic diets.
o    Assist with care of teeth and mouth.
o    Assist with grooming - care of hair, including shampoo, shaving, the ordinary care of nails and general skin care.
o    Assist with bathing patient in bed, tub or shower.
o    Assist patient with eating.
o    Assist patient with dressing.
o    Maintain safe environment.
o    Arrange schedule so that the patient follows medical recommendations such as increased physcial activity.
o    Report changes in the patient's needs and conditions to the supervising nurse.
o    Keep simple records.
o    Perform incidental household tasks essential to the patient's health needs, such as: 
-     Light housekeeping.
-    Making and changing beds.
-    Dusting, vacuuming and mopping the rooms used by patient.
-    Dishwashing.
-    Tidying kitchen.
-    Tidying bedroom.
-    Tidying bathroom.
-    Listing needed supplies.
-    Shopping for patient if no other arrangement possible.
-    Personal laundry of patient if no family member able or available; this may include ironing and mending.
-    Sending linen to laundry.
o    Record patient care activities daily.
o    Participate in case conferences.
o    Prioritize work/care tasks to ensure all duties and patient visits are completed as assigned.
o    Utilizes universal precautions and infection control techniques as necessary.
o    AIDES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ADMINISTER ANY MEDICATIONS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!
